Mission / History

Location

The University farm is located around 3km southeast of Iyo-Hojo station of JR Yosan line, and around 21km north from the campus of faculty of Agriculture, Ehime University. This region is close to the Takanawa Mountains and has paddy fields on plain land, fruit and vegetable fields, and grazing lands on the hilly area. Climate in Setouchi region is warm, and mean annual temperature of 14.5 degree Celsius, and annual precipitation of 1,200mm. The soil in this area is mostly the decomposed granite soil, which is weathered granite.

Mission

The University farm’s mission is to provide opportunities of practical education to students through activities in the field such as production and management, in addition to develop practical techniques for agricultural production utilizing various agricultural theories. Furthermore, the University farm aims to contribute to agricultural progresses in the region, Japan and the world.

History

Matsuyama farm

March, 1914 The Ehime Agricultural School, founded in March 1900, bought an orchard from Koyukai, the alumini association, and settled a school farm.
May, 1929 The Ehime Prefectural Matsuyama Agricultural School (renamed from the above-mentioned school) moved to the present location of the College of Agriculture, Ehime University, and bought private properties to make a campus farm.
April, 1945 The Ehime Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry School (upgraded) succeeded it as the research farm.
June, 1949 The Ehime Prefectural Matsuyama Agricultural College (school systems changed)succeeded it as the research farm.
April, 1954 The College of Agriculture, Ehime University (transferred to a national university) succeeded it as the experimental research farm.
January, 1976 Renamed as Matsuyama Farm, the College of Agriculture, Ehime University
December 1982 Abandoned

Niihama farm

MMarch, 1948 The Ehime Prefectural Agriculture and Forestry School obtained private lands to settle a farm for training independent land-owner farmers.
June, 1949 The Ehime Prefectural Matsuyama Agricultural College (school systems changed)succeeded it as the management farm. Reclaimed by using bulldozers rented from the Okayama Farm Land Office.
April, 1954 The College of Agriculture, Ehime University (transferred to a national university) succeeded it as the general farm.
January, 1976 Renamed as Niihama Farm, the College of Agriculture, Ehime University.
December, 1982 Abandoned

University Farm

March, 1976 In order to integrate the two farms in Matsuyama and Niihama, a new farm (188,097 m2) was founded in Hattanji, Hojo, after obtaining private and municipal lands.
March, 1977 The lodging house was constructed.
March, 1979 Reclamation was completed.
March, 1982 The construction of main buildings was started in 1979 and ended in March 1982.
January, 1983 The Matsuyama and Niihama farms were integrated as the Experimental Farm, College of Agriculture.
